Description:

Warhamer 40,000: Space Marine is a third-person Action Shooter in which players accept the role of a Space Marine Captain tasked with the defense of the empire as well as humanity against the Chaos Faction lead by the ruthless Ork hordes. Players will have to use their exceptional size, strength, armor, weaponry and fighting spirit in order to succeed. Features include: a new seamless combat system allowing equally for ranged and melee action, hordes of deadly enemies of various kinds, intense 16-player online multiplayer and more.

Story:

In Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine you are Captain Titus of the Ultramarines, humanity's last hope for survival in a war-ridden future. Step into the armor of this superhuman warrior and use a lethal combination of deadly weapons to crush overwhelming alien forces. Fight against the savage Orks and the unholy forces of Chaos in a brutally violent world based on the richest science fiction fantasy ever created.

Battle System:

Space Marine features a fluid combat system that allows players to seamlessly switch from ranged to melee weapons without interrupting the flow of combat. Hitting the melee button at any time will result in a close range strike with the equipped hand-to-hand weapon as well as the camera pulling out to melee distance. Pulling either trigger will instantly snap the view back to behind the player’s shoulder ready for precise shooting. These systems are immediately responsive and leave the player in full control at all times. As the player dispatches enemies in Space Marine they will be earning "Fury" which can be used to unleash devastating ranged or melee attacks. The player can use "Fury Marksman" to enter a heightened form of awareness where time seems to slow down allowing them to pick off multiple ranged enemies in the blink of an eye. Alternately the player can opt to utilize their "Fury Strike" up close and personal with a sweeping area of affect attack that will obliterate anything close enough and knock-back and stun more distant foes.

Multiplayer:

In Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, there are two multiplayer modes. The cooperative mode is similar to the typical 'horde' mode found in other games, but is unavailable at launch, launching instead 30 days after the game itself. In addition to the cooperative mode, you can play an 8-vs-8 class-based competitive mode. There are three basic classes you can choose from on the side of the loyal Space marines or the traitorous Chaos Space Marines. You can gain experience in gameplay by getting kills and assists which will allow you to gain levels. There are also challenges associated with different weapons and will unlock perks for weapons or armor pieces to customize your space marine with. In the competitive multiplayer, there are two different game modes. The first is annihilation, which is a standard team death match, with the winning team being whoever has the most kills. The second is seize ground, in which the two teams battle over objectives on the field that give points, and whichever team gains the most points wins. A capture the flag game mode is possible through a future update.

Multiplayer Classes:
  • Tactical Marine/Chaos Space Marine: The Tactical Marine/Chaos Space Marine is a well-rounded soldier, able to competently fight in both fire fights and melee combat. He has access to every rifle including the sniper rifle, and the combat knife.
  • Devastator Marine/Chaos Havoc: The Devastator Marine/Chaos Havoc sacrifices maneuverability for long range fire power. He is heavily armored and has access to the largest ranged weapons available to the player, including heavy bolters, lascannons, and plasma cannons. However, he is less agile, and his only melee attack available is a kick.
  • Assault Marine/Chaos Raptor: The Assault Marine/Chaos Raptor is the close combat specialist in the game. He is able to jump into combat quickly with his back-mounted jump pack and he is able to wield the more powerful close combat weapons with which to destroy his opponents. However, his selection of ranged weapons is limited to side arms only.

 Characters:

  • Captain Titus - The player-controlled character. He leads the Ultramarines' Second Company in defence of the Forge World of Graia. Unlike most Ultramarines, he does not espouse a strict adherence to the Codex Astartes.
  • Sidonus - An old Space Marine Veteran Sergeant who serves as Titus' second-in-command.
  • Leandros - A young Ultramarine Battle-Brother about 75 years old (considered "young" for the Space Marine life cycle), who looks up to Captain Titus.
  • 2nd Lieutenant Mira - The commanding officer leading the remaining Imperial Guard units against the Ork invasion of the Forge World.
  • Inquisitor Drogan - A radical inquisitor whose obsession with defending the Forge World led him to order the Forge World's scientists to open a portal, which brought about an invading Chaos warband.
  • Nemeroth - A Chaos Terminator Sorcerer Lord and leader of the Chaos warband which invades Graia.
  • Corporal Antioch - One of the remaining Imperial Guard soldiers against the Ork invasion on the Forge World who helps Captain Titus.
  • Warboss Grimskull- Leader of the Ork horde invading Graia and veteran of numerous Ork campaigns. Holds great disdain for all humans and Space Marines.

Reception:

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine has received a positive reaction from critics. IGN awarded the title a score of 7.5, praising the recreation of the Warhammer 40,000 universe and the variety in the enemy encounters. GamePro had also praised the visuals of the game and the blending of hack-and-slash and shooter gameplay. However, they cited problems with the campaign, claiming that it was linear and that some of the environments were uninspired.
DualShockers awarded the game a very positive score of 9.5 out of 10, writing that "It fully does justice to the IP without sacrificing gameplay and it can easily stand on par with the best of the genre, while providing something diverse and unique at the same time. Uniqueness, great stories and complex characters are exactly where the third person shooter genre is most often found wanting, and Space Marine Delivers".

Enjoy!
